The Sitemap Index Architecture
When you exceed the limits, you don’t just make “bigger” sitemaps. You create a hierarchy.
- Sitemap Index: The “Parent” file. It lists the child sitemaps (e.g., `sitemap1.xml`, `sitemap2.xml`). This is the ONLY file you submit to Google Search Console.
- Child Sitemaps: The files containing the actual page URLs. Each one must obey the 50k/50MB limit.
Gzip Compression (.gz)
You will often see sitemaps named sitemap.xml.gz. This is a compressed version.
Crucial Note: The 50MB limit applies to the uncompressed size. Even if your Gzipped file is only 10MB, if it expands to 60MB, Google will reject it. Our calculator estimates the raw, uncompressed size to keep you safe.
Sitemap Best Practices
Never include pages in your sitemap that are blocked by noindex or robots.txt. This sends mixed signals to Google (called “Dirty Sitemaps”).
The <lastmod> tag is the most critical attribute. It tells Google “I changed this page on this date,” triggering a re-crawl.
