Control How Google Sees Your Site
Technical SEO is 90% instruction. You need to tell Google exactly which pages to index, which links to follow, and which versions of a page are the “original.”
Get this wrong, and you suffer from Index Bloat (too many low-quality pages ranking) or Duplicate Content issues (diluting your authority).
This Meta Robots & Canonical Helper generates the precise code snippets you need to control the bots and protect your rankings.
The “Noindex” vs. “Robots.txt” Trap
A common mistake is using robots.txt to block a page you want removed from Google. This does not work.
- Robots.txt (Disallow): Tells Google “Do not crawl this.” However, if someone links to the page, Google can still index it (without seeing the content).
- Meta Noindex: Tells Google “You can crawl this, but DO NOT include it in search results.” This is the only way to reliably remove a page from the index.
Why Canonicals are Critical
Canonical tags solve the “Duplicate Content” problem. If you have a product accessible via three URLs:
- /product/blue-shoes
- /shoes/blue-shoes
- /product/blue-shoes?sort=price
Google sees these as three separate pages. By adding a Canonical Tag pointing to version #1, you tell Google: “Ignore the others, give all credit (rankings/links) to Version 1.”
