The “Goldilocks Zone” of Keywords

In the early days of SEO, you could rank by stuffing the keyword “best pizza” 50 times into a page. Today, that gets you penalized.

Modern SEO is about Topic Relevance, not just frequency. This Keyword Density Calculator helps you find the balance. You want to use your target term enough to be clear to Google (Frequency), but not so much that it looks spammy (Density).

What is a Safe Keyword Density?

While Google has no hard rule, industry data suggests these safe zones:

  • 0.5% – 1.0%: Natural writing. Good for secondary keywords.
  • 1.0% – 2.5%: The Sweet Spot. This is typically enough to signal strong relevance without triggering spam filters.
  • 3.0%+: Danger Zone. Unless the content is very short, this often reads unnaturally and risks a “Keyword Stuffing” penalty.

Beyond Density: Term Frequency (TF-IDF)

Density is just a ratio. Google uses something called TF-IDF (Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency). This measures how important a word is relative to how often it appears elsewhere on the web.

For example, the word “the” has high density but low value. The word “hydroponic” might appear 3 times (low density) but has massive value because it’s rare. Use our Content ROI Calculator to see if your high-quality content is actually generating value.
