Why Google Isn’t Indexing Your Pages

If you have a large site (10k+ pages) and notice that new content takes weeks to appear in Google, you likely have a Crawl Budget problem.

Googlebot does not have infinite resources. It assigns a “budget” to your site based on two factors: Popularity (how important you are) and Speed (how fast your server responds).

This Crawl Budget Estimator calculates your site’s “Speed Limit.” It shows you exactly how many pages Google can physically fetch per day before it gives up and moves on.

The “Time to First Byte” (TTFB) Factor

The single biggest killer of crawl budget is a slow server. Googlebot waits for your server to respond (Time to First Byte).

Fast Site (200ms)

Googlebot requests a page. It loads instantly. Googlebot thinks: “This server is healthy, let’s request 10 more pages right now.”

Slow Site (1000ms+)

Googlebot requests a page. It hangs. Googlebot thinks: “This server is struggling. I better back off and crawl less so I don’t crash it.”

3 Ways to Increase Your Budget

  • Improve Server Response: Use caching (Redis/Varnish) and a CDN to lower TTFB below 200ms.
  • Prune “Zombie” Pages: If you have 5,000 tag pages that get zero traffic, they are wasting Google’s time. Delete or Noindex them.
  • Fix Redirect Chains: Every 301 redirect forces Googlebot to make a second request. 5 chained redirects = 5x the budget wasted.

Check Your “Crawl Stats” Report

You don’t have to guess. Go to Google Search Console > Settings > Crawl Stats. Look at the “Average response time” graph. If it is trending up, your crawl rate is likely trending down.
